The laboratory conducts studies, investigations, and analyses into the application of new knowledge of hydrologic forecasting and related water resources problems.
The Hydrologic Research Laboratory (HRL) supports the National Weather Service (NWS) hydrologic services program through the design, development and implementation of hydrologic forecast tools and techniques for use at NWS River Forecast Centers and Weather Forecast Offices.
In support of this mission, HRL conducts studies, investigations and analyses leading to the application of new scientific and computer technologies for hydrologic forecasting and related water resources problems. HRL sponsors and conducts applied research in order to gain a better understanding of the physical processes and phenomena involved in the evaluation and prediction of water movement in all phases of the hydrologic cycle. Research and development support for the hydrology-related components of major NWS projects is provided. HRL personnel provide training and implementation support on hydrologic forecasting techniques in support of the NWS hydrologic services program.
