Abstract:

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Working with states and other federal agencies, ATSDR seeks to prevent exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites. ATSDR also has developed toxicological profiles of hazardous chemicals found at these sites. The following goals have been established for ATSDR:
        • Identify people at health risk because of their exposure to hazardous substances in the environment.
        • Evaluate relationships between hazardous substances in the environment and adverse human health outcomes.
        • Intervene to eliminate exposures of health concern and prevent or mitigate adverse human health outcomes related to hazardous substances in the environment.

ATSDR's goals and objectives are specific to hazardous substances which are contaminants in groundwater, solid waste, or otherwise released to the environmental. ATSDR emphasizes hazardous substances released into community environments from waste sites or from emergency releases (e.g., transportation mishaps).

ATSDR's Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database (or HazDat), is the scientific and administrative database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations.
