Abstract:

The Gulf Ecology Division of EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) is responsible for study of the physical, chemical, and biological dynamics of coastal wetlands, estuaries, and near-shore marine environments. Their goal is to protect and preserve the living resources of the Gulf of Mexico and similar environments by providing descriptive data and developing diagnostic procedures to characterize the ecological condition of near-coastal areas and corresponding watersheds, describing sources and causes and evaluating rates of environmental decline. Areas of research include estuarine animals and their environment; chemical analysis of organic residues in estuarine animals; and effects of carcinogenic compounds on aquatic organisms.
