DSSI operates a liquid hazardous, mixed, and radioactive waste thermal treatment, brokerage, and storage facility that can accept all RCRA hazardous waste codes (except F020, F021, F022, F023, F026, and F027), including waste containing radionuclides with atomic numbers 1 through 83, 88, 90, 92, through 96. Specifically, waste types accepted include: naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), scintillation liquids, freon, wastewaters, paint sludges, heavy metals, halogenated and nonhalogenated solvents, and oils. Only pumpable liquid wastes can be accepted into the facility. Acceptable waste containers include: vials, bottles, drums, totes, and truck tankers.
Wastes are thermally treated in the industrial boiler which in turn produces electricity. The residues from the boiler are disposed off-site at a licensed and permitted facility.
The facility is operating under an approved RCRA Part B Permit, Boiler & Industrial Furnace (BIF) Part A and B Permits, and can accept CERCLA wastes.
For waste streams to be accepted at the facility, the wastes must be profiled by the generator, analyzed for the required parameters, and formally accepted by the facility.
