Abstract:

Since 1785 the Federal Government has been conducting surveys of the Western United States starting in the Ohio River basin and moving westward. The survey is the basis for describing land units for transfer out of Federal ownership or to hold certain land for public use. All surveys are approved by the Chief Cadastral Surveyor in each of the Bureau offices. The survey records are made up of three major parts as follows:

Field Notes: The field notes are the written record of the survey. This record identifies and describes the lines and corners of the survey and the procedures by which they were established or reestablished.

Survey Plats: The plat is the drawing that represents the lines surveyed, established, retraced, or resurveyed, showing the direction and length of each line; the relation to the adjoining official surveys; and the boundaries, description, and area of each parcel of the land. Occasionally the plat may constitute the entire record of the survey.

Survey Index: A computer log showing when a survey or resurvey was done, by whom, volume and page of the book where the field notes may be found, and other important information related to surveys.

All survey records are approved by the Chief Cadastral Surveyor in each of the Bureau offices. All Bureau surveys are required to follow the Manual of Surveying Instructions for the Survey of the Public Lands of the United States. The manual provides the standard for Federal agencies and many States to follow in the execution of surveys.
