Technology Description:

Holguin, Fahan & Associates, Inc., is the largest operator of cone penetrometer testing (CPT) rigs on the west coast and is dedicated to utilizing CPT for accurate, rapid, inexpensive subsurface characterization of hazardous materials release sites. CPT is well suited for screening the three-dimensional extent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in saturated soils using soil gas sampling. However, all existing systems for decontamination of the sample collection line after collecting a contaminated sample and pushing to the next depth are cumbersome, slow or ineffective. HFA's patented decontamination system is a dual-line system in which one line is used for sample collection and the second line is used for carrying ultrapure air down the CPT rod and back up the sampling line, thus purging the sample line of entrained contaminants.
Performance Status/
Limitations:

The primary limitation of the Dual Line Soil Gas Sampler is the depth capability of CPT. Although CPT can penetrate to depths of up to 200 fbg, the typical working depth in normally consolidated soils is 50-150 fbg. CPT will be refused in bedrock, coarse gravels, and highly consolidated soils. The method may also encounter difficulty in collecting soil gas samples from low permeability and/or high moisture soils such as clays.
