Abstract:

NIOSHTIC is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) electronic, bibliographic database of literature in the field of occupational safety and health. NIOSHTIC cites more than 185,000 records of cases involving hazards in the workplace and the resulting injuries and illnesses. In addition to the standard bibliographic data (author, title, and reference), each NIOSHTIC record includes the NIOSH control number, accession numbers to other systems (NTIS and CIS), submission date, keyword field, an informative abstract, CAS numbers, SIC Codes, and CODEN (unique six character alphanumeric codes assigned to titles of publications by the International CODEN Service of the American Chemical Society).

The principal acquisition sources for NIOSHTIC® include: technical articles selected from approximately 160 core journals, proceedings of scientific meetings, and symposia; all NIOSH documents; selected pre-1974 documents from CIS (the International Labour Organization's occupational safety and health activity); translations of non-English occupational safety and health articles acquired by NIOSH; references cited in NIOSH criteria documents and current intelligence bulletins.

Types of information contained in the database include:
        • Behavioral Sciences - behavioral and psychological problems, diseases, disorders of workers, psychogenic illness, worker motivation, job stress, shiftwork, etc.
        • Biochemistry, Physiology, and Metabolism - measurement and interpretation of bodily process changes in humans or animals after exposure or stress.
        • Chemistry - qualitative and quantitative analytical methods; field, survey and exposure sampling methods; and any methodology which relates to measurement of chemical agents.
        • Control Technology - descriptions of other methods of ventilation, recirculation, and control of industrial agents and processes, personal protective equipment and clothing, etc.
        • Education - reports and evaluations of efforts to develop or to implement occupational safety and health curricula for training physicians, industrial hygienists, etc.
        • Engineering - descriptions of the design, construction and use of materials, equipment, processes, and structures in the workplace if they pertain to the protection of the worker.
        • Epidemiology - discussions about the incidence and distribution of diseases, disorders, and injuries among workers. Including factors such as alcohol, smoking, and drug use.
        • Ergonomics - discussions of studies on the interaction of equipment, machines, work environment, and man.
        • Health Physics - reports of research on physical agents such as ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, noise, vibration, and other physical agents that affect the worker.
        • Occupational Medicine - reports of case studies, clinical reports, surveillance, monitoring, analysis and diagnostic techniques of industrial health care.
        • Occupational Safety and Health Programs - articles that give details of industrial health and safety programs, health awareness, and programs designed to protect the worker.
        • Pathology and Histology - descriptions of structural and functional changes in tissues and organs caused by occupational exposures.
        • Safety - prevention of traumatic occupational injury, protection of workers by equipment, clothing and procedures, accident-prevention studies statistical and accident rate data.
        • Toxicology - In-vivo and in-vitro studies of the effects of exposure to biological and chemical agents, carcinogenic, teratogenic, mutagenic and reproductive effects on workers.
        • Hazardous Waste - occupational safety and health at hazardous waste sites; health effects on employees, families and persons living in close proximity to the hazardous waste site.
