Abstract:

EPA’s Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) plays an important role in developing national strategies for protecting public health and the environment from potential risk from toxic chemicals. OPPTS establishes criteria for assessing chemical substances and sets standards for chemical testing protocols, develops rules and procedures for industry reporting and regulations for controlling substances deemed hazardous to humans or the environment, and enforces standards. OPPTS promotes pollution prevention and the public's right to know about chemical risks, and evaluates pesticides and chemicals to safeguard the public as well as our most threatened species and ecosystems from environmental harm.

The Office promotes the use of safer chemicals, processes, and technologies; promotes life-cycle management of environmental problems such as asbestos; advances pollution prevention through voluntary action by industry; and promotes the public's right to know. Dealing with emerging issues like endocrine disruptors and lead poisoning prevention are top priorities. OPPTS is made up of two primary offices: The Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP), and the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT).
