Technology Description:

A patented liquid nitrogen-free refocusing trap has been designed using a split-Stirling Linear Drive cooler. The refocusing trap is automated and cools rapidly to -185 deg. C and then warms rapidly to +100 deg. C for desorption into a gas chromatographic column.

XonTech has refined the design of the cryogenic trap. It features low conducted and radiated emissions from the cold surfaces, low mechanical vibrations and acoustically quiet operation.

The Stirling Cooler has been well developed and documented. Cooling is obtained by cyclic out-of-phase motion of a dual compression piston and a displacer regenerator. The working gas is helium, which is compressed by the pistons reducing its gas volume. Heat of compression is rejected to ambient. Stirling cycle refrigerators have best coefficient of performance in practice and best ratio of total weight per watt refrigeration when compared with other refrigerators.

Limitations:

Limitations:

One limitation of the Model 940 Cryogenic Refocusing Trap is the life expectancy of approximately 5,000 hours of operation.

Another limitation of the closed cycle cooler is that the temperature for desorption cannot exceed 100 deg. C. However, this is not a problem for USEPA T0-14 method for the analysis of C2 - C10 hydrocarbons.

Also the Model 930/940 with the GC/GCMS system with the helium purge of the sorbent traps before desorption, has been found to effectively remove residual water vapor, which would otherwise interfere with the analysis.
