These data bases were compiled by drawing on approximately 100 published sources. For the Vegetation Database, vegetation data from varied sources were consistently recorded using the hierarchical United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization classification system. The raw data base distinguishes about 180 vegetation types, that have been collapsed to 32 for the archived, available GISS Global Vegetation Database.
The land use data base was compiled using a hierarchical system. The raw data set, identifying major agricultural systems annotated with crop combinations, identifies about 120 land use types globally; the archived version has been collapsed to five cultivation intensity groups indicating percentages of 1-degree cells that are cultivated. Albedo is compiled from both the natural vegetation and cultivation characteristics, and is provided for the 32 vegetation types as seasonal snow-free values. The vegetation and land use data bases can be used independently, or they can be combined to produce a land cover data base.
