The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent U.S. government agency responsible for promoting science and engineering through programs that invest over $3.3 billion per year in almost 20,000 research and education projects in science and engineering. The NSF promotes the progress of science and engineering through the support of research and education programs. Its emphasis is on high-quality research for improved understanding of the fundamental laws of nature. Divisions within NSF include: Division of Environmental Biology; Division of Bioengineering and Environmental Systems; Division of Atmospheric Sciences; Division of Earth Sciences; and Division of Ocean Sciences. NSF supports programs in Biological Sciences, Computer and Information Sciences, Engineering, Geosciences, Math & Physical Sciences, Polar Research, and Social / Behavioral Sciences.
The NSF was established by the National Science Foundation Act of 1950 (and related legislation), and was given additional authority by the Science and Engineering Equal opportunities Act and Title I of the Education for Economic Security Act. The Foundation consists of the National Science Board of 24 parttime members and a Director (who also serves as ex officio National Science Board member), each appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate.
