Abstract:

The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument data provide global area cover-age (GAC), local area coverage (LAC) and high resolution picture transmission (HRPT). When processed into mapped images the data are used for cloud study, weather status, and surface studies.

The AVHRR instrument receives data in either four or five spectral bands depending on the instrument. The bands include two visible and up to three infrared channels. The instrument has a 1 km resolution capability for LAC and HRPT data. A typical resolution value is 4 km for the GAC data.

The AVHRR instrument has two different versions. The first version has two visible channels and two infrared channels with the long wave infrared channel being repeated into the fifth channel position. The second version has two visible channels with three infrared channels. Both versions have a resolving power of 1 km. The low-resolution (4 km) data are gathered over the Earth's entire surface on an orbit by orbit basis. The high-resolution (1 km) data are gathered over selected areas. The LAC is recorded onboard spacecraft for playback at a later time. The HRPT data are available to those users who are able to readout the data on a real time basis. Data are stored on magnetic tape in the Level 1B format. This format is standard for all the Television and Infrared Operational Satellite (TIROS)-N series of satellites. The image data are stored on photographic film or negatives. The image data can be generated from Level 1B data tapes.
