Abstract:

The Benthic Surveillance Project monitors contaminant concentrations in bottomfish and sediments in nearshore water of the United States. Bottomfish and surficial sediment are analyzed for over 70 contaminants, including poly chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated pesticides, trace elements, and more. Samples are collected from estuaries, bays, and near-shore marine areas of the East, Gulf, and West coasts of the United States.

Benthic Surveillance data are available upon request in a number of reports and publications. Contact the Office of Ocean Resources, Conservation and Assessment (ORCA) for more information. Information on ORCA publications can also be obtained at their World Wide Web site. Information on the Benthic Surveillance Project is also available at the EPA web site at http://www.epa.gov/cesssi96/ces/guide/prog(15).htm
