The National Hydrologic Bench-Mark Network Program provides a nationally uniform basis for assessing long-term trends in the physical and chemical characteristics of surface waters largely unaffected by land use activities. The National Stream Quality Accounting Network provides a nationally uniform basis for assessing large-scale and long-term trends in the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of the nation's streams and rivers. The principal contaminants monitored for in freshwater include pH, alkalinity, sulfate, nitrate, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and others. Data are collected either monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly, depending on the location. Public inquiries should be made to the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
