Abstract:

Experimental multicolored or black-and-white image maps produced from digital data collected by Land Satellite (LANDSAT) and system Probatoire d'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) sensors. Scales range from 1:24,000 (Point Loma, CA) to 1:7,500,000 (conterminous 48 States). Most of the color image maps are generated to simulate color-infrared photography. Many satellite image maps in standard quadrangle formats have topographic maps printed on the reverse sides.

LANDSAT image maps are multicolored, photographic-like maps made from data collected by Earth resources satellites (LANDSAT and SPOT sensors). They are a small but diverse group of mostly experimental maps printed in a wide range of scales and sizes.

Some image maps are printed to express natural landscape color, but most are printed to emphasize objects seen in particular wavelengths of light, primarily near infrared.

On color-infrared film, healthy vegetation appears in shades of red. Unhealthy vegetation appears in shades of pink, blue, or white. Clear water appears dark blue or black. Sediment laden water takes on a light blue tone. Most cultural features appear as a steely blue-gray.

Many satellite image maps are formatted as standard maps in the United States Geological Survey (USGS) series, e.g., 1- by 2-degree, 1:250,000-scale; or 30- by 60-minute, 1:100,000 scale, with the topographic maps printed on the reverse sides.

Satellite image maps between the scales of 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 meet national map accuracy standards.
