Five data sets are provided in this offering. All data sets are for a base year of 1987, although the information should be representative of annual use patterns for the period 1987-1990. One table contains estimates of agricultural pesticide use by pesticide by estuarine drainage area (EDA). Use estimates are in pounds of pesticide (active ingredient) applied per year for a group of 35 commonly-used compounds. Estimates are made for 102 estuarine drainage areas in the US. Another table contains pesticide use estimates by pesticide for 532 coastal counties. Each county is identified by name, state, and the 5-digit FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) code established by the US Department of Commerce. A third table contains estimates of crop area by EDA by crop for 76 crops. Each crop is identified by name with crop area given in acres. A fourth table contains estimates of crop acreages for 76 crops for the coastal counties in the data base. The fifth and final table contains average annual pesticide application rates for coastal counties by pesticide and crop. The application rates are in pounds of active ingredient applied per acre of crop per year in the county and takes into account multiple applications during the growing season.
