Abstract:

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Its mission is to: provide access to agricultural information and develop new knowledge and technology needed to solve technical agricultural problems; to sustain a viable and competitive food and agricultural economy; to enhance quality of life and economic opportunity for rural citizens and society as a whole; to maintain a quality environment and natural resource base. ARS research falls into six main categories: soil, water and air; plant productivity; animal productivity; commodity conversion and delivery; human nutrition and well-being; and systems integration of scientific knowledge. ARS has primary responsibility to:

Provide initiative and leadership in agricultural research,
Conduct research on broad regional and national agricultural and related problems,
Conduct research in support of Federal action and regulatory agencies,
Provide technical expertise to meet national food, food safety, and environmental emergencies, and
Serve as an agricultural science resource to the executive and legislative branches.

ARS is also the home of the National Agricultural Library (NAL), which serves as a national library of the United States and as the library of the USDA. The NAL was created as the departmental library for the USDA in 1862 and became a national library in 1962. As one of four national libraries of the United States (with the Library of Congress, the National Library of Medicine, and the National Library of Education), it is also the coordinator for a national network of State land-grant and USDA field libraries. In its international role, the Library serves as the U.S. center for the international agricultural information system, coordinating and sharing resources and enhancing global access to agricultural data. The NAL's collection of over two million volumes and its leadership role in information services and technology applications combine to make it the foremost agricultural library in the world.
